Fela Kuti Becomes First African Artist Inducted Into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, marking the first time an African artist has received the honour. The recognition cements Fela’s legacy as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, whose fusion of jazz, funk, highlife and traditional Yoruba rhythms laid the groundwork for the genre that today carries his name.

Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, who has carried on his father’s musical and activist tradition, has spoken about growing up around the elder Kuti’s uncompromising artistry and politics. The induction has been widely celebrated across Nigeria’s music industry, with many of today’s biggest Afrobeats stars publicly crediting Fela’s influence on their own sound.

The honour arrives as Afrobeats, the genre’s modern commercial descendant, enjoys unprecedented global reach, with Nigerian acts regularly topping international charts and headlining major festivals worldwide.
